Importance of the 2020 Census
US Census workers will be ending in-person door-to-door visits a month earlier than previously reported. Door-to-door census worker visits will now end September 30, 2020. ODP encourages residents to complete the census online or via mail. Updated July 31, 2020.
The 2020 Census is underway. Why is this important for people with disabilities? The government needs an accurate count of who is living in communities in an effort to know how much money the community needs like services and programs for people with disabilities. The ARC has created a short resource to explain the importance of being counted in the census here.
The most important thing people can do is respond online, by phone, or by mail when you receive your invitation. Due to COVID-19 the deadline for self-responding has been extended until October 31, 2020. This means that there is still plenty of time to make sure that you and the individuals you support are counted in the 2020 census. If you or the person you support cannot find the invitation and still need to respond, go to the 2020 census website.
If you are looking for a more comprehensive summary of the consensus, there is a thorough breakdown available on the Disability Rights of California website.
