Presented by Kathy M. Davis, M.Ed.

This session will examine the results of a study recently published by Focus on Autism and Other Developmental Disorders that involved three high school students with Asperger Syndrome; the effects of Power Cards on the students’ initiation and maintenance of conversational skills was the focus of the work. We will also discuss theory underpinning the strategy and possible topics for future research. The Power Card strategy, designed by Elisa Gagnon and initially utilized in a study by Keeling, Myles, Gagnon, and Simpson (2003) to teach sportsmanship skills to an elementary-age girl with autism, can be easily adapted to address a variety of skills and can be implemented by individuals across the autism spectrum.
